Parappa Block Panchayath
One of the six Block Panchayats in Kasaragod district of Kerala, Parappa Block Panchayat was established in 2010. Since its formation, it has been playing a significant role in rural development, coordinating local self-government activities, and implementing various schemes of the Central and State Governments.
Considering the vast geographical area, unique geographical conditions, and development requirements of the eastern hilly region, the Government of Kerala decided to establish a new Block Panchayat with Parappa as its headquarters. The Block Panchayat covers an area of 542.72 square kilometres and comprises seven Grama Panchayats—Panathady, Kodom-Belur, East Eleri, West Eleri, Kallar, Kinanoor-Karinthalam, and Balal—with a total population of 181,247. Approximately 22% of the population belongs to Scheduled Tribes.
Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, this region is a confluence of rich folk art traditions, indigenous heritage, religious harmony, customs and rituals, and an enduring agricultural tradition. Through exemplary interventions in grassroots governance and rural development initiatives, Parappa Block Panchayat has gained national recognition.
Its achievement of receiving the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for outstanding public administration under the Aspirational Blocks Programme has brought national-level recognition to its excellence in governance and development.
